Shape Your Own Future—Become a Metalworker!
Field of Study: Chasing Techniques
Do you enjoy creative work, have a good eye for shapes and surfaces, and want to shape metal by hand? Then an apprenticeship as a metal artist specializing in chasing is just right for you.
At the Plein Art Foundry, you’ll learn how to sculpt, refine, and finish metal surfaces. Using a hammer, chisels, and a great deal of finesse, you’ll work with bronze, brass, and other metals to give works of art and architectural elements their final form and impact.
Or you can create entirely new works of art by designing and shaping new models. Metalworker is the most creative of our apprenticeship programs.
Do you have an eye for design and attention to detail?
Metalworkers specializing in chasing are designers who combine artistic vision with the precision of a craftsman: They shape, hammer, and chisel metals to create unique objects, reliefs, and works of art. With great finesse, an understanding of design, and technical expertise, they create textures, details, and shapes on metal surfaces that make each piece unique. Traditional craft techniques play just as important a role in this process as modern equipment and tools.
At our company, metalworkers are true artisans. We create one-of-a-kind pieces and intricate metalwork in which creativity and precision go hand in hand. You’ll work closely with the design and planning teams, bring creative ideas to life in clay and metal, and give our pieces their unique character. Your work combines art, craftsmanship, and technology—and transforms metal into something truly unique.
Metalworkers specializing in the art of chasing design and finish metal surfaces by incorporating artistic ornaments, fonts, coats of arms, and reliefs into metals such as copper, brass, or stainless steel—often through chasing (using punches, hammering, and tools), but also through non-cutting forming (hammering) or surface finishing (polishing, patination), thereby creating one-of-a-kind pieces such as jewelry, decorative fittings, and sculptures, or restoring historical objects.
